Gerard Reve (1923-2006) was one of the first Dutch writers who used photography to build his controversial image and thus influence. Selling his books he caused a sensation with writing about gay sexuality and heresy, and these themes are also reflected in the photos. Reve was photographed with skulls, crucifixes and teddy bears, and thus consciously emphasized his controversial reputation.
